Description
Originally called the Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal, the final civil engineering achievement of Thomas Telford and the last of the big canals to be built opened in 1835 in response to growing competition from the railways.
The Shroppie runs almost straight for 66 miles from Autherley Junction near Wolverhampton to Ellesmere Port and the Manchester Ship Canal. With the branch to Middlewich it’s half of the popular Four Counties cruising ring.
