Description
Started in 1770 it took forty-six years to build and open all 127 miles of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal that climbs 500 feet over the Pennines to connect Liverpool Docks with the Aire & Calder Navigation and the Humber Estuary.
There are ninety-one locks between Liverpool and Leeds, including the Bingley Five-Rise, and ten more on the Rufford and Leigh branches. The Burnley Embankment is one of Robert Aickman’s Seven Wonders of the Waterways.
