Description
Running for 93 miles from the River Trent at Derwent Mouth, through the mile and a half long Harecastle Tunnel, to Preston Brook and the Anderton Boat Lift in Cheshire, the first Grand Trunk canal was promoted by Josiah Wedgwood and built by canal pioneer James Brindley.
Opened in 1777, the Trent & Mersey created the inland port of Shardlow and sent Burton-on Trent beers and the ceramics products of the Potteries on their way to all corners of the Empire.
