Description
One of the earliest, most important and most financially successful of the southern canals originally ran for 91 miles, on a meandering route set out by canal pioneer James Brindley, before being shortened by 14 miles in the 1820s.
Sharing a short stretch between Napton and Braunston with the Grand Union, the Oxford Canal features 43 locks, early cast-iron and quirky wooden lift bridges. The village of Cropredy hosts Fairport Convention’s famous folk festival.
