Description
Running for 16 miles through grand and almost mountainous scenery the delightful Peak Forest Canal was built to support the quarrying of limestone at Doveholes, to which it was connected by tramway at Bugsworth Basin.
Opened fully in 1804, when construction of the Marple flight of locks was completed, the Peak Forest with the Macclesfield Canal and Ashton Canal became one of the routes competing to connect Manchester and London.
